Project Organically Grown Girls' ActivismProject Organically Grown Girls' Activism (POGGA) is Monsoon's strategy in authentically including young girls/women from the Asian Pacific Islander communities in Iowa between the ages of 14 to 18 years old in the movement to end violence against women and girls. Three to four young women will begin working with Monsoon this July 2009 as interns. They will be assigned to partner with one of the staff and two board members who will act as their mentor. The interns will attend a 20+hours training on domestic violence and sexual assault and facilitation training. POGGA interns' projects will include community events planning for the Domestic Violence Awareness Month (October 2009) & Sexual Assault Awareness Month (March 2010); community outreach activities for the API youth; curriculum planning for the 2009-2010 school sessions at Lincoln High School, East High School and Hiatt Middle School; community assessment focusing on API youth in Central Iowa; and innovative fundraising events. POGGA interns are required to write and critically think about their experiences as community workers and future leaders. So, watch out for their writings in Monsoon's blog!
